A Gilded Lady (Hope and Glory #2)

A Gilded Lady (Hope and Glory, #2)Happy Book Release Day!

Caroline Delacroix is at the pinnacle of Washington high society in her role as secretary to the first lady of the United States. But beneath the facade of her beauty, glamorous wardrobe, and dazzling personality, she’s hiding a terrible secret. If she cannot untangle a web of foreign espionage, her brother will face execution for treason.
Nathaniel Trask is the newly appointed head of the president’s Secret Service team. He is immediately suspicious of Caroline despite his overwhelming attraction to her quick wit and undeniable charm. Desperate to keep the president protected, Nathaniel must battle to keep his focus fully on his job as the threat to the president rises.

My Review:

I loved this brand new historical novel by Elizabeth Camden. The entire story was beautifully crafted and well written. With history and a little bit of romance, I was intrigued the entire way through the book.

Set during in the early 1900s, Caroline Delacroix enters the story as the first lady’s secretary. I absolutely loved how Camden mixed her fictitious characters into history as if they really are in the history books. Though this is book two in Camden’s Hope and Glory series, it can be read as a stand alone novel. Caroline’s goal is to find a way to rescue her younger brother from being tried as a traitor of the United States. Her only way of doing that is to get the president to pardon her brother. With her brother in jail for treason this makes her a prime suspect for Nathaniel Trask, the newly appointed secret service agent hired to make the president and his family safe. Camden always does a great job with her main couples and these two were no exception. Let the sparks fly!

The descriptions and the details in this story were incredible. With only a couple of words into the story I could imagine the setting and characters. Oh, and all the costumes too! ( :

So overall, very enjoyable historical fiction. Highly recommend! Definitely looking forward to book three!

I received this book from the Bethany House Publishing of the Baker Publishing Group through Netgalley for this review. All words are my own.

A Desperate Hope

Eloise Drake’s prim demeanor hides the turbulent past she’s finally put behind her—or A Desperate Hope (Empire State, #3)so she thinks. A mathematical genius, she’s now a successful accountant for the largest engineering project in 1908 New York. But to her dismay, her new position puts her back in the path of the man responsible for her deepest heartbreak. Alex Duval is the mayor of a town about to be wiped off the map. The state plans to flood the entire valley where his town sits in order to build a new reservoir, and Alex is stunned to discover the woman he once loved on the team charged with the demolition. With his world crumbling around him, Alex devises a risky plan to save his town—but he needs Eloise’s help to succeed. Alex is determined to win back the woman he thought he’d lost forever, but even their combined ingenuity may not be enough to overcome the odds against them before it’s too late.

My Review:

This is the third and final installment of Camden’s Empire State series. Let me first say this, even though it is sad to see this series end, I am glad it ended with such a great story. Camden’s writing style bring to life the settings, characters, and the plot. I have read many of Camden’s books and like that she always adds a bit of history in her stories.

The main characters, Alex and Eloise, are star-crossed lovers who dreams were both dashed by Eloise’s overbearing guardian. Determined to keep the two apart, Eloise is sent away by her guardian. Many years later, Eloise meets Alex again but their re-acquaintance does not go well since she is on a team sent to demolition the city he loves. Alex is surprised to see Eloise but this time she is not a naive girl but an independent woman wanting to leave her mark on the world.

To conclude this review, Elizabeth Camden created yet another beautiful piece of fiction. Fans of Camden’s book will not be disappointed in this one.

A Dangerous Legacy

Page-Turning Romance and Intrigue in Award-Winning Author’s Next Historical Novel.
Lucy Drake’s mastery of Morse code has made her a valuable asset to the American news agencies as a telegrapher. But the sudden arrival of Sir Colin Beckwith at rival British news agency Reuters puts her hard-earned livelihood at risk. Newly arrived from London, Colin is talented, handsome, and insufferably charming. Despite their rivalry, Lucy realizes Colin’s connections could be just what her family needs to turn the tide of their long legal battle over the fortune they were swindled out of forty years ago. When she negotiates an unlikely alliance with him, neither of them realizes how far the web of treachery they’re wading into will take them.

a dangerous legacy

Another prime example of Elizabeth Camden’s amazing ability to draw readers into her excellent books, from the first word in the book to the last one, is A Dangerous Legacy. Plus it leaves readers giddy with the exciting news that another book is coming out! Well done, Elizabeth Camden.

I could leave this review just like that but, don’t worry, I am going to keep talking about this book. If I had been allowed to, I would have read this book in one sitting but I did it in two. I was just glad it was the weekend so I was able to. Lucy was a great main character and so was Colin (Just read his description on the back cover and you will understand why). Camden’s book (all of her books) is descriptive, has historical content, and is very well written.

So they say “don’t judge a book by its cover” but honestly, don’t you look at the front covers of books? Well I did that with this novel, and when Elizabeth Camden posted the cover, I knew I was going to read this book.

This book is very good and I highly recommend A Dangerous Legacy.

Nickolas Drake, Commissioner of Water for New York, is skeptical–and surprised by his reaction to Rosalind. While they fight against their own attraction, they stand on opposite sides of a battle that will impact thousands of lives.

Against the Tide

Boston of 1891 is a city of hope and ambition, where mariners, merchants, and dreamers thrive in the cobblestone streets of America’s most historic city. Within the harbor of Boston’s naval shipyard, Lydia Pallas has become a trusted assistant to an Admiral in the U.S. Navy. Fluent in seven languages, she spends her days translating documents from all over the world.

Lydia’s remarkable language skills bring her to the attention of Alexander Banebridge, a mysterious man on a quest to rid the world of the scourge of opium. Only Lydia has the rare combination of language skills and courage he needs to advance his cause. A man as coolly analytical as he is relentless, Bane never bargained on falling in love with Lydia. As he battles the bittersweet love that grows between them, Bane’s mission will take Lydia away from everything—and everyone—she ever held dear.

Against the Tide

I read this book awhile back and I just reread it. I could read this book over and over again; it is that good. This book is one of my personal favorite inspirational fiction books of all time. I have not read all of Elizabeth Camden’s books but I have read, To the Farthest Shores and Lady of Bolton Hill. This one is my favorite, so far and since it is one of my all-time favorite books, Camden will have a hard time surpassing it.

The two main characters, Lydia and Bane, are on my list of favorite fictional couples. They were perfect and written exceptionally well. I read Lady of Bolton Hill first, but when I learned Camden wrote a book with Bane as the main character, I knew I would like the book and I did. Lydia had an interesting story of her own, but I don’t want to give away too much.

This book deals with the opium distribution that went on during the 1890s. It was sad to read that so many turned a blind eye to it and even fed it to young children.

This book is a novel but the character Bane is from the book, Lady of Bolton Hill. But he is the only character from either of the books. On Camden’s website, there is a page about Against the Tide. Camden included extra scenes and information about the book that is interesting to read about, if you have read the book. She explains why she did not make this book apart of a series. Which is really sad because I would love to read more about Lydia and Bane. Also, I think it would be awesome to read a book where the main characters (Lydia/Bane and Clara/Daniel) from both of the books (Lady of Bolton Hill and Against the Tide) meet, since Bane met and became friends with Clara in the book Lady of Bolton Hill. Also, at the end of Lady of Bolton Hill, Clara wanted to find Bane, and Daniel said he would find him for her. So, if you have not guessed, I think Elizabeth Camden should write a book where the characters meet!

If you cannot tell, I really like Against the Tide and I would recommend it.
